About this Site

This portfolio is coded from scratch, and my first full-scale web design project. It took two to three weeks of typing away during evenings and weekends between work and classes to put this website together, and was the perfect starting point to jump fully into web design. Learning the theory of HTML and CSS is one thing, but putting it all together into one cohesive project is another. The design of the site is almost purely CSS (excluding the image galleries). This isn't necessarily out of a fear of JavaScript—I just like to keep things as simple as they need to be.

Before touching any code, I went through a couple of rounds of mock-ups. The first step was creating a list of all the content I would need, and an outline of my sitemap. Next came a set of pencil-drawn wireframes, which allowed me to step back and think about the basics building blocks of the site. After that I started throwing together some visual designs (the image is an early imagining of the homepage) and was finally ready to start throwing down some brackets. Taking it one step at a time allowed me to focus my efforts on gathering and designing what I actually needed, and provided a clear path for the construction of the site itself.

Here are the tools that went into making jennifer-martin.com a reality:

  • Magnific Popup
  • Font Awesome
  • Atom text editor
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Adobe InDesign
  • Google Drive
  • Paper and pencils
  • Approximately 50 cups of tea
